How to improve website ranking on Google is the same as asking how to improve your website SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).
As small business owners, we are all looking to improve our website ranking on Google to increase sales. But how do you do it? It is a common question I get asked as a digital marketer and something I have previously spoken about as a guest speaker at a recent Women in Business West Kent event, so I thought I would share my top tips to help improve your website ranking to boost your business online.
- Register on Google. This is the most important starting point if you want Google to rank your website and not enough businesses are aware of it. Whether your website is brand new or a few years old, you need to tell Google about your website, otherwise it won’t rank you at all.
- Google Business Profile. This used to be called Google My Business but has recently changed its name. It is a great SEO hack especially for location based businesses as the platform is linked to Google Maps. Once registered, you can rank in a prominent place on the SERPS (search engine results page) on Google; and if you stand out near the top, your website is more likely to be clicked on by potential customers.
- Website functionality. Improve website ranking on Google by ensuring your website functions properly. Google will not be keen to rank you if your website takes too long to load or contains errors.
- Optimise your website for mobile. Did you know that almost 50% of the UK’s web traffic is from a mobile phone? That’s a lot of potential business to be missing out on if your website can’t adapt to a mobile version and Google will be able to tell!
- Blog! What do you offer? How can you help your target audience? Answer their questions by including a blog page on your website that offers value to your potential customer. This is a great way for your target audience to find you on Google.
- Ask for a backlink when networking. A backlink is a link from one website to another. The more backlinks you have from high performing websites, the more likely Google will recognise you as a trustworthy site and rank you. Networking with other businesses is the perfect time to ask for this and it’s super important, so don’t forget to do this at your next event!
- Be patient, an organic SEO strategy can take up to 6 months to rank on Google but I have seen results a lot earlier than this. Keep checking Google and don’t be disheartened if you don’t rank straight away.
Once you start ranking on Google, you need to keep up a strategy to maintain it and always seek to improve website ranking on Google too. As a result, I would recommend the following:
- Regularly maintain your website to avoid glitches that can affect its overall function. You want your website to be operating well all the time to keep in Google’s good books!
- Keep all your business information up to date. If any aspect of your business changes, make sure you update your website first including Google Business Profile.
- Continue networking and collaborating with others to get those backlinks! Ask at every networking event you go to when discussing possible opportunities with each other.
- Review your strategy every 6 months. Keep an eye on when and how you’re ranking. What are people searching for when they find you on Google? Do you need to change the search terms you’re ranking for?
- Link your website to Google Analytics to track where your website traffic is coming from and follow your customer journey on your site to ensure you maximise the opportunity to convert your website traffic into sales.
